A cataract is a clouding of the eye's natural lens. This clouding can cause a reduction in the clarity of vision. Most cataracts occur gradually as we age, however, they can occur at birth or from trauma. Vision changes due to early cataracts often cause a change in the eyeglass prescription. Updating the eyeglass prescription may restore some of the loss of vision due to an early cataract. When the clarity of vision is lost beyond the point that prescription changes will improve vision, removing the cataract is recommended.
